Sobre a noção de competência na educação e no mundo do trabalho: aproximações com a perspectiva de Paulo Freire

Abstract

In the context of the recent debate about competences in education, the general objective of this essay is to discuss the concept of teacher's competence from Paulo Freire's perspective and its approximations with the concept that has been used in education (Ministry of Education) and in the world of work. Specifically, it is proposed to: ii) present the history and the different conceptualizations of the term competence in the world of work and in education; and iii) situate Paulo Freire's perspective about teacher's competence, differentiating it from the term used in the world of work or even in official documents of the Ministry of Education. Method: The essay aims to present the concepts from different approaches, collating relationships, comparisons, and important aspects to reflect on the teaching process. As discussions arising from the essay, we notice a certain incompatibility between the technical and instrumental vision of competence used in the world of work when compared to Freire's humanistic, affective, and dialogical proposal. The more technical view of competence does not seem to consider tacit and relevant knowledge for the citizen formation of those who learn, since such knowledge is not always measurable or productive. In this sense, we believe that it is worth discussing such incompatibilities within school practice.
