Abstract

Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is characterized by a blockage in lung development. Objective: To compare the efficiency of two techniques of analysis of elastic fibers in lungs of premature rabbits. Methods: Preterm rabbits born on the 28th and 29th days of gestation were subjected to ambient air or oxygen for 11 days, randomized into four groups, Ar 28 (n=17), O2 28 (n= 7), Ar 29 (n=8), O2 29 (n=8). The lungs were removed and stained for analysis of elastic fibers. The Nikkon E600 microscope and the image analysis software (Image-Pro Plus 4.5®) were used for elastic fiber analysis. To compare the analysis between microscope and program was used paired “t” test. Results: There were significant differences between the proportion of elastic fibers performed on the microscope and at the program (p <0.001). Conclusion: The two types of analysis of elastic fibers yield different results. Additional studies comparing the two techniques are required.
