Introduction: Pain, considered a sensory experience that may be associated with injuries, can aggravate suffering in cancer patients.
Objective: To identify the effectiveness of products derived from the Cannabis genus in the treatment of cancer-related pain compared to other pain treatments and placebo in cancer patients.
Material and methods: Systematic review that followed the PRISMA checklist for its preparation. The research question was created using the PICO strategy, with the search terms being “Cancer pain”, “Cannabis” and “Cannabinoids”. Searches for studies were carried out in the PubMed, Embase and CENTRAL databases.
Results: The predominant interventions of the selected studies were the use of extracts of Cannabidiol (CBD), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD and THC compunds (Nabiximols); the main outcomes analyzed were pain relief and cancer-related symptoms.
Conclusion: The use of Cannabis derivatives to treat pain did not demonstrate superiority over conventional treatments or placebo.
