The topic of the research is complex projects management. The study of complexity of projects emerges as traditional approaches become obsolete or ineffective. This research objective is to identify the factors that influence the complexity of the projects developed by the company. In order to accomplish the research, theoretical and structural fundamentals of complex projects were reported. This descriptive exploratory research was conducted through a case study in a telecommunication projects sector of a Brazilian oil and gas company. Interview, observation and research documents were used as instruments for data collection. Data analysis was based on theoretical framework of project management and dimensions proposed by Geraldi, Maylor and Williams (2011): structural complexity, uncertainty, dynamic complexity, pace and sociopolitical complexity. The survey found that dimensions of complexity act simultaneously and are interdependent. It was evidenced that several factors influence the complexity of the projects, such as the efficiency of the organization and the autonomy of the project manager. We conclude that the theory of complex projects offers an alternative view to traditional approaches project management.
