Abstract

Project management competencies can be understood as a set of applications of skills, experiences and personality traits to be applied in the dynamic context of projects. Thus, by developing their competencies, the project professional can lead their activities to expected results based on defined and accepted standards.  Entities such as World Economic Forum (WEF), Project Management Institute (PMI), Agile Business Consortium (ABC), among others, invest in research to understand the competencies of professionals and present a set of key competencies. Based on research over the past few years, more than 170 project management competencies categorized by common, relevant and unique competencies have been evidenced, distributed in different typologies. Given the different sources of the studies and guides presented, it is inferred about the difficulty in affirming what are the competencies of the future for the project professional. However, it is possible to assume that the competencies needed to work on projects are those that best fit the context of the project typologies through the Competency Funnel approach. In addition, the competencies that were previously assigned only to the project manager are being distributed to the people involved in the project. Although this prescription can be useful for an initial development in project management, it is important that the project professional seeks to know the meaning of the competencies for the applied context. Thus, this professional can perform a self-analysis in order to understand their skills gaps and plan to fill these gaps.
